What is Acupuncture?

Acupuncture is a core therapy in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) that uses fine, sterile needles inserted at specific points on the body to restore balance, relieve pain, and promote healing. At ZEN TCM, acupuncture is always performed by a licensed, highly trained practitioner, ensuring safety and comfort.

A great video explaination from ClinicalPhysio has provided sufficient introduction.

What is Electroacupuncture?

Electroacupuncture is a modern adaptation of traditional acupuncture that applies gentle electrical stimulation to the needles. This enhances the effects of acupuncture and is especially useful for chronic pain, neurological conditions, and muscle recovery.

How Does it Work?

  • Traditional View: Acupuncture stimulates the flow of Qi (vital energy) along meridians, helping to unblock stagnation and restore harmony in the body.

  • Modern Science: Research shows acupuncture and electroacupuncture can:

  • Activate nerves and release endorphins (the body’s natural painkillers)

  • Improve blood flow and reduce inflammation

  • Modulate the nervous system and promote neuroplasticity (the brain’s ability to adapt and heal)

  • Electroacupuncture: Adds gentle electrical pulses to increase stimulation, shown to be especially effective for nerve pain, motor symptoms, and stubborn chronic conditions.

What Does the Science Say?

  • Chronic Pain: Multiple studies and international guidelines support acupuncture for chronic pain, including back, neck, and joint pain.

  • Neurological Conditions: Electroacupuncture has shown 40–46% improvement in motor function for Parkinson’s disease and significant benefits for nerve pain and muscle recovery.

  • Mechanisms: Clinical research highlights effects on neuroprotective pathways (Nrf2, PINK1/Parkin), endorphin release, and improved circulation.

  • Safety: Acupuncture is safe when performed by trained professionals. Side effects are rare and usually mild (temporary soreness or slight bruising).

During Your Session:

  • Fine needles are gently inserted at selected points.

  • Most people find treatment deeply relaxing and often fall asleep.

After Your Session:

  • You may feel relaxed, energized, or experience mild soreness.

  • Drink water and avoid strenuous activity for a few hours.
