What is Scraping
(Gua Sha)?
Gua Sha, or scraping therapy, is a traditional East Asian healing technique that uses a smooth-edged tool to gently scrape the skin. This process stimulates circulation, releases muscle tension, and promotes your body’s natural healing processes. At ZEN TCM, scraping is performed by a licensed practitioner and is always tailored to your comfort and clinical needs.

How Does Gua Sha Work?
-
Gentle scraping increases local blood flow, helps move “stagnation” (Qi and blood), and relieves tight or painful muscles.
-
Microcirculation boost: Scientific studies show that Gua Sha can increase microcirculation and reduce local inflammation, supporting faster recovery.
-
Nervous system effects: The technique may help calm the nervous system and reduce stress-related tension.

What Does the Science Say?
-
Pain Relief: Gua Sha is shown to provide relief for chronic musculoskeletal pain, neck and back stiffness, and tension headaches.
-
Functional Improvement: Some studies suggest that scraping therapy can improve range of motion and reduce muscle soreness after exercise.
-
Safety: When performed professionally, side effects are mild and temporary—usually some redness or light marks that fade within a few days.
